The Artist
I am Rebecca Bresnahan, a visual artist based in Melbourne, Australia, exhibiting both locally and internationally. With a background in tattooing, insect taxidermy, and spiritual roots grounded in Jesus Christ, I combine dramatic shading and intricate depictions of insects with themes of spirituality. The result is work that evokes a sense of peace and safety, reflecting our Creator’s love for us.
I work primarily with oil paint on wooden boards. My recent body of work draws inspiration from Genesis 1:26: “And God said, ‘Let Us make man in Our image, after Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.’” In particular, I am drawn to the word “dominion.”
Through portraits of women intertwined with insects, I meditate on the meaning of dominion and what it asks of us as men and women in our interactions with the creatures placed under our care. The work explores not only the responsibility inherent in dominion, but also an ideal vision of harmony between humanity and all living things; an image of what the world may have looked like before it was corrupted by death.
